2026 Winter Olympics: Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo Make Sporting History
The 2026 Winter Olympics, held from February 6 to 22, were a historic event that united two Italian cities—Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. These are the first Winter Games where the opening and closing ceremonies were held in different locations: the start took place at Milan's San Siro stadium and the conclusion at the ancient amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona.
The main sporting events took place in the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, as well as in the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Milan became the center of hockey, speed skating, and short track speed skating, while Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the alpine skiing, bobsleigh, and luge competitions. Additional venues were located in Anterselva, Val di Fiemme, Livigno, and Predazzo.
About 3,000 athletes from more than 90 countries took part in the Games. The program included 16 sports and 116 medal events. Ski mountaineering was featured for the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics. Other innovations included women's dual freestyle moguls and a mixed team skeleton event.
The Games' mascots, the ermines Tina and Milo, symbolized the host cities. Norway led the medal count. Russian athletes competed as neutrals; Nikita Filippov won silver in ski mountaineering.
